FinOps Foundations · Module 03
Quantify Business Value
Turn cost into business language: forecast and budget cloud spend, connect it to value with unit economics and KPIs, and estimate the cost of new work before it is built.
What you will learn
- Build a cloud forecast from trend plus known changes and set budgets with alerts
- Define unit cost metrics and KPIs that link spend to business value
- Estimate the cost of a design with pricing calculators and Infracost before deploying
Lessons
- Forecasting and Budgeting
A cloud forecast combines the usage trend with known business and engineering changes; budgets turn the forecast into team-level targets with alerts on actual and forecasted spend.
- Unit Economics and KPIs
Unit economics divides cost by a business driver — cost per order, per active user, per GB processed — so spend can be judged against value; FinOps KPIs such as allocation coverage, commitment coverage and forecast variance track the practice itself.
- Planning and Estimating
Estimate cost before building: use provider pricing calculators for new designs and Infracost in pull requests to show the monthly cost impact of Terraform changes, so cost becomes a design input rather than a surprise.
